The Overall Approach
While the grading standards are followed
generally and as closely as possible, eye-appeal is the most
significant and, ultimately, the controlling factor when it comes to
grading autographs.
As a general reminder, the basis of autograph grading really comes
down to the degree of strength and weakness within the signature,
with an emphasis on eye appeal and presentation.

Autograph Grading Standards
Gem-MT 10: Gem Mint
Virtually perfect autograph; strong, clear, with bold writing.
The autograph contains no skipping or retracing, and is
aesthetically perfect in terms of placement.
Mint 9: Mint
A superb condition autograph, very light skip (unrecognizable to
the naked eye), a slight acceptable variance in boldness of the
autograph, location of the autograph does not hinder the eye appeal
of the autograph.
NM-MT 8: Near Mint to Mint
High end autograph with closer inspection. Exhibits a slightly
more noticeable skip in the autograph, exhibits very slight fading,
autograph is legible and intact, location of the autograph does not
hinder the eye appeal of the autograph, very light bleed on one of
the letters, very light retrace by the original signer.
NM 7: Near Mint
Very strong autograph, entirely legible to the naked eye, small
degree of even fading to the entire signature, minor blemish to one
of more letters, more significant skipping or bleeding are present,
yet
insignificant to the overall presentation of the signature.
EX-MT 6: Excellent Mint
Very presentable autograph, entirely legible to the naked eye,
small degree of even fading to the entire signature, minor blemish
to one or more letters, slightly more advanced degrees of skipping
or bleeding, very slight retrace by the original signer 10%.
EX 5: Excellent
Signs of aging is evident, lost luster of a bold autograph, clear to
decipher with the naked eye, few minor smudges in a limited area
of the autograph, minor areas of fading or skipping, a more
significant retrace with still limitation of 25% of original signer.
VG-EX 4: Very Good to Excellent
Exhibits noticeable areas of advanced fading, eye appeal issues
have begun to set in, loss of up to 40% of it visible content, a more
significant retrace with still limitation by original signer 35% or
less.
VG 3: Very Good
Exhibits a more clear eye appeal, noticeably faded throughout, lost
up to 50% of it visible content, exhibits mild flaws.
G 2: Good
Exhibits mild significant loss of eye appeal, exhibits significant
flaws, lost up to 75% of its visible content, difficulty in
deciphering but clear enough to authenticate.
PR-FR 1: Poor to Fair
Exhibits extreme loss of eye appeal, difficulty in deciphering, worn
and or faded, fold linen over the autograph. |
