Authentication Process

Each item is methodically examined and reviewed by our authenticators. Academy of Manuscript and Autograph uses state of the art technology to protect your genuine valuable collectible from any foul play. To combat counterfeiting and provide peace of mind to collectors, the Academy of Manuscript and Autograph employs this level of Authentication System.

1 Level: Examination

  • Ink/Medium Analysis
Has the ink permeated the paper or does it sit on top of the fibers just recently applied? Does the ink use for the signature and/or writing match the time period.
  • Object Evaluation
200 year old ink has acid and actually etches the paper over time. Modern pencil drawings have graphite shine until they oxidize. Modern paper deteriorates and becomes more brittle. Brown mildew spots appear called foxing. Microscopic analysis can tell if the signature was applied recently
on old paper on top of the old foxing.

  • Side-By-Side Autograph Structure Analysis
The authenticator more closely examines each and every component and letter of an autograph, paying close attention to characteristics such as signature flow, style, spontaneity, letter angle, etc.

  •  Video Spectral Comparator (VSC4)
A powerful workstation designed to examine questionable documents and autographs using sophisticated color and infrared imaging, magnification, coaxial lighting, and side lighting on-screen. The VSC detects erasures, reveals masked and obliterated signatures, differences in ink types, and several other features useful for autograph forgery detection.

2 Level: Grading
While the grading standards are followed generally and as closely as possible, eye-appeal is the most significant and, ultimately, the controlling factor when it comes to grading autographs.

3 Level: D.N.A Tagging

Covert Tagging

Once an autograph passes our forensic examination and is deemed genuine, the item is marked with invisible ink which contains a synthetic DNA sequence combination specific to Academy of Manuscript and Autograph. Our DNA code is certified and registered with the manufacturer and is never produced again for any other entity except to that which is issued A.M.A.A, ensuring positive identification and authentication capabilities. The chances of replicating this exact sequence is 1 in 33 trillion. The DNA tag can be detected in a lab and also with a proprietary infrared laser. In fact, by using the laser, the invisible DNA ink will glow RED.

Overt Tagging

Our Hologram Stickers with matching serial numbers for the item authenticated and your letter of authentication are offered in oval shape (.75 inch wide x .375 inch high) is best for affixing to baseballs, softballs, footballs, and other contoured and hard surfaces.
All of the Hologram Stickers with matching serial numbers are tamper evident. If removed, the hologram image will self destruct. In addition, the label is non-destructive and does not harm your valuable item.

4 Level: Certification

Letter of Authenticity:  All items that passes our forensic examination will receive a Letter of opinion "Letter of Authentication" at no additional charge. The bottom of the Letter of opinion "Authentication" features a light red "PROTECTED" logo printed in heat reactive ink technology - just rub the logo with your finger or apply other heat source and watch it temporarily disappear. This feature adds a second level of defense over the AuthentiGuard - Hidden Image Background - as the disappearing act of the logo CANNOT be reproduced by anyone.

  • A high resolution photo of your exact submission
  • A summary of the characteristics of your autograph on why it is genuine
  • Location of authentication and dimensions
  • Authentication and DNA date
  • Current owner
  • Hand signature by the autograph authenticator's
  • Six digit alphanumeric DNA serial number that matches the tamper evident label.

Inconclusive Authentication:

However, in the unfortunate event that your item should
be deemed non-authenticate you will receive a Letter
describing to you why this autograph is
Inconclusive.
